Nvision SideShow Competition Reminder

Just a reminder that the Nvision SideShow competition ends tomorrow (July 18th). The four finalists will receive a trip to the US for the Nvision 2008 event and the winner will be picked there by judges and will receive a Dell XPS 420 computer with a SideShow screen built-in.

I've submitted my entry, Computer Status. It's a combined Sidebar and Sideshow gadget that displays information about things like your ram and processor usage and how much battery life you have remaining or what WiFi networks you're connected to. The SideShow part is very basic as I haven't made any SideShow gadgets before but the Sidebar part is complete. It doesn't require a SideShow device to work however, you can run it simply as a sidebar gadget as shown below. I may be doing some updates to this in the future so I'll be sure to keep you posted on the blog.

Very nice gadget indeed :) Would be nice if you'd add some customisation-options though. Like the ability to change color and the option to choose what information you want to show.

I agree. I would like to he able to eliminate my mapped drives from the list and show my memory usage in GB instead of % used. Otherwise, this thing is awesome. I have replaced 3 gadgets with this 1. The only other thing I would like to add would be a Top Processes. That is the only Gadget that I still run separately from yours, other than the NowPlaying.

If I remove a drive (ie a mapped drive) I throw an exception error from the gadget. It doesn't stop working, just throws an error.

Okay Joshua, i still need to finish this gadget really as it's definitely not perfect. Double click the gadget to remove the drive from the gadget once youve removed it from your computer

Law,

Sorry man, I wasn't trying to pick on it or anything. I still love the gadget. I didn't log in last time I posted (jskolm) is also my post, so like I said, I have replace multiple gadgets with this one.

I'm a previous donating customer (Server Ping Pro) and just found your Computer Status gadget. Wow! It's so close to what I need, and I can replace 5 different gadgets with it!

Feature requests: 1) ability to delete radio / day of week and date listing at bottom, 2) ability to lock out certain drives from being displayed.

Otherwise I wouldn't change a thing!

Where do I send my donation and how much would it take to add a few of these tweaks? ;)

Thanks!

Stephen

Hey Stephen,

Unfortunately I won't be making any modifications to the current Computer Status. I will hopefully be working on a new similar gadget with the company I work for so I'll look into implementing your requests on that. It will deffinitely have modules that can be disabled though.

Law,

I played around with tweaking the gadget.htm, settings.htm and js\main.js with Notepad and was able to comment out some of the stuff I didn't want and update the list of drives to exclude a Vista ReadyBoost drive that I don't want to know about. I also changed the RAM to show the RAM used vs. remaining (it looked odd to me that the bar graph would go up but the number would go down.) I'm still missing something because when the gadget first comes up when starting the sidebar everything looks screwy and nothing populates until you click the "options" icon and then click Ok. Afterwards everything fills in correctly. Odd. I'm sure I commented out something I shouldn't have.

I have to say, this is a very impressive piece of work. I really like this gadget! Another $25 sent your way via PayPal.

Thanks,

Stephen

Well, correct that... PayPal wants the amount in pounds sterling versus dollars, so make it 25 quid. I know it's closer to $50 because of the conversion rate, but that's one advantage to your being in the UK!

BTW, I spent two years living and working in the Spango Valley area of Scotland, west of Glasgow, so I certainly benefitted from the difference in the exchange rates sending money back to the States... :)

Thanks again!

Stephen

Thanks for that :) It sounds like an errors occurring when the gadget first launches, then opening and closing the options 'restarts' the gadget. If you want you can email me the gadget and I can probably fix that fairly quickly.

Cheers, Law

Law,

Thanks for the offer! I've sent you the files zipped up via PM.

Splendid work. After a bit of tweaking and graphic overhaul, this has become the main reason I and three others even bother to run Sidebar. Would be great if you kept improving it but I'm not really sure what's left to be done. My addition of a next button beside "play" proved handy for one :)

P.S. Some of your calculations that do not allow for the 100% graphic to be displayed. A drive would be 100% and not show the 90% graphic for instance. Easily fixed.

Keep it up!

I'm really glad to see so many of you modifying this gadget to your needs. I've also had several emails from people who have modified it by adding more info or changing images etc so I'm glad so many of you find this useful.

Some of the features people have mentioned, like disabling modules, adding extra radio stations, having a next button (like presets), I actually implemented all those in a previous version of this gadget but unfortunately that's more buggy, doesn't include sideshow support, and has some code that's not myn.

And how about support for multi-core CPUs? I would actually also like to see some more tweak possibilities. For instance, I'm not interested in the radio nor the date. But the rest is all good - I like to keep an eye on what my computer is doing.

Thanks.

Very nice gadget, but on my laptop its dont work good. Gedget dont refreshing and some icons was dont located. Can you repair that bug??

Stefan Grozescu said...

What am I missing here? The gadget is all screwy, graphics scrambled, and "re-setting" it (as above) doesn't help much (it "unscrambles" the upper 2 lines though... but that's it)

Law James said...

Most likely something went wrong trying to check on your hard drives.

any chance on an update, have widows 7 and the radio does not work...

Hey. I so love this Gadget! Its been there on my desktop ever since I downloaded it. I just hope that you can continue to develop it and add more features so that I'll just have one gadget running on the desktop and it would be yours!

Any chance of an update so it will work on Windows 2008 R2? I have it on my Win7 boxes x65, but it won't run my Win2k8 R2 x64 box.

So Computer status gadget is gone; what gives?

Kiyoshi Grayfeather said...

Computer Status is a great gadget, I only wish there were a way to change the color of it. Digital Clock gadget has a great interface for that. Maybe you can borrow the code to make it work. Thankyou for creating such cool gadgets.

I really love this gadget but unfortunately Microsoft has removed it from their gadget gallery. Can you upload it somewhere else and post the link here?
