Now Playing 4.0

Download

Now Playing 4.0 is now complete, hopefully I can now leave the gadget for a few more months and I hope you guys are happy with the new tweaks.

  • Major: Delay between switching songs on WMP, iTunes, Winamp or Foobar and it updating within the gadget has been minimized, it is now normally under a second. This has also led to reduced resources usage.
  • Major: Revamped skin system with 10 new large skins and 4 new skins provided by TheHobbyLounge.com
  • Added "Tips and Tricks" page to settings
  • Localised amazon search results for UK, US, CA, FR, DE, JP
  • Amazon album art tweaked
  • Media Monkey album art support, art is now taken straight from MM
  • Media Monkey track editing (double click on track data when gadget is undocked)
  • Media Monkey play/pause fixed
  • Font size settings fixed
  • You can now close Winamp normally, the quit button has been removed from the player
  • Lots of tweaks, bug fixes and code improvements across the whole gadget

Note:

If you get a "Not a valid gadget package" error, delete all downloaded copies of the gadget and try again, this error means something went wrong when downloading the gadget.

If the track doesn't change when you change it manually in your media player: uninstall all copies of NP and reinstall 4.0 from the link above. This problem is related to still having the beta installed.

I ve downloaded this and tried to run it it say that it not a valid gadget.

Corection it is saying "this is not a valid gadget package"

Anonymous said...

But it seems to have updated it looks good. Like the updates on this.

Anonymous said...

Sorry me again I just checked the version on it and it say 3.97 so I guess it didn't work. Oh well I still like the Gadget. Cheers

Hey Anon, best thing would be to uninstall the gadget try again and make sure it's not cached anywhere on your computer and you download it correctly. The version on my server is 4.0 and is a valid gadget as I have tested it on many machines already.

A suggestion for the next or future releases:

For some reason when you play videos, it plays in the side bar, which, obviously, makes the computer a bit slower than typically expected.

Also for some reason b/c of this plugin, after closing WMP after watching a movie, if the movie wasn't completely done it'll continue to play until you click "pause" in the sidebar or close WMP per Task Manager. For some reason it stops WMP from closing.

this gadget doesn't update the displayed song for Itunes when docked to the sidebar and song is changed from Itunes

i installed version 4... but it produces a white border around the gadget where the shadow is supposed to be...

i uninstalled it and re installed it again but i'm still having the same problem.

This gadget is pro.

I love this gadget but now I use aimp2 ( http://www.aimp2.us/ ) for playing music, do you plan an integration of this player ?

Anonymous said...

Hay,
thanks for the great plug in, I just have one question, I some times manage to use the gadget without opening Windows media player, and that is what I really want.. it happens from time to time, but it stays on until I get some sort of an error (expected from vista) . With the new version there is a delay between one song and another.. is that right...

Thanks again,
Sally

Ben: Settings - Disable video preview

Anon virus: There is no virus, but the way the gadget downloads the plugins could be mistaken for a virus. Check the bottom of the readme for how to download the plugins manually.

Bonez: Try uninstalling all version of NP then redownloading 4.0

Gilberto: Try using Vista

Anon aimp2: No API so not possible

solid gadget bro, keep up the good work

"Bonez: Try uninstalling all version of NP then redownloading 4.0"

Thanks for the tip, came here to report the same issue and that fixed it perfectly! :-)

bonez565 said...

thanks for the tip works great now.

Anonymous - sally
that happens due to a problem with WMP where the program closes but the process doesn't stop. So music keeps playing and can be started even if WMP is closed.

in short it is a problem with WMP not the Gadget

Xcom923 said...

for whatever reason the center of the icon is clear (where the play image is for the wmp version). why is that??

Judge Zetsumei said...

WOW!another update! :D cheers. Best gadget ever! :)

Anonymous said...

Thanks I removed the old version and ran the updated and all is fine this is the only one so far that has run well keep up the good work.

Anonymous said...

Law,

Just letting you know, the quit Winamp button is still there, as is the random rubberbanding when closing Winamp through the player itself. The quit button still works well every time, though.

Law James said...

Anon Winamp: Are you sure you have 4.0?

Anonymous said...

Law,

Yes, it's definitely 4.0; I uninstalled just to make sure, and it says 4.0 in the about tab.

parry said...

Good work, just wondering, is it possible to stop that message when you try to close itunes that says something else is using it?

Law James said...

Parry: use the quit button within the gadget

Anonymous said...

Hello!
I'm using foobar. If i change the track using hotkeys or the control buttons in foobar the gadget does not recognize that there is a new song being played!

...so the cover and the songinformation in NowPlaying does not change!

regards
matz

Law James said...

Have you tried uninstalling all copies of the gadget and reinstalling it yet?

parry said...

Parry: use the quit button within the gadget
---------------

When you say quit button do you mean actually close the gadget?

Law James said...

No, theres on inside the gadget.

Anonymous said...

I have the same problem with Foobar2000 in v.4.0. Sometimes when I play song from next album, cover and songinfo does not change

parry said...

I can't seem to find the close button :\ lol

marauder-bex said...

Hey, I keep getting the 'not a valid gadget package' error when trying to install on a vista basic laptop. I tried uninstalling all previous versions but it's not helped, any other options?
Or could you link me to a previous version so I can still use it? Best itunes gadget I've ever used.
Thanks.

-----------------------------------

Yes i have reinstalled it a few times (foobar plugin too)! I have noticed that the problem does not appear if foobar is not minimized to the tray!

Any Idea?

Matz

Hi - I absolutely LOVE this gadget, but for the past few versions have been unable to switch skins. No matter what I set it to, it stays on the same one. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, etc. with no luck. I'll be glad to make a donation if this can be fixed. Thanks!

Law James said...

Do you have the gadget undocked?

Big_Berny said...

I also have a white border around the gadget. Using Vista SP1 with all updates...

Gilberto Ruiz said...

*** update about white border ***

I uninstalled all versions of Now Playing, erased all previously downloaded files and temp internet files. Downloaded it again... and installed it directly, telling explorer to open instead of saving...

and now it seems to be working perfectly. ;D

Amnesiac said...

I have foobar2000 v0.9.5.
Song titles doesn't refresh when song changes.
Any help?

Amnesiac said...

If i select "minimize to notification area" (under "default user interface") the titles work correctly.

Law James said...

Could you please email me so i can give you a version to tryout? Thanks, Law

Robbie G said...

Hi Law,

Just installed this gadget. I think it's great!

One thing I was confused on was how to save cover art that is not on the local system. In the "?" tab, it says to hit Ctrl + S, but that does not do anything for me. Plus, I checked to Auto-save art to folder, but have not found any art downloaded.

Thanks for the awesome gadget!

Robbie G

Stephanie said...

"Do you have the gadget undocked?"

Was this re: my skin issue? If so, no, the gadget is docked. Did it previously support skins while docked?

Stephanie said...

Never mind, I figured it out! Had to set it back to "Always large (undocked size)" in the layout settings.

Thanks again for the great gadget; donation coming atcha. :-)

marauder-bex said...

IDK tried it again today and it was fine installed straight away and works great, maybe flock just hates me.
Thanks muchly.

Paul said...

Hi,
Unfortunately I can confirm that version 4.0 does not change songs and art in Foobar when changing songs within Foobar (or the songs just normally progress during play). I have uninstalled and installed several times.
The last version worked so it's too bad.
Otherwise a great gadget! I love the album art download feature. Take that Steve Jobs. :)

Law James said...

Paul, try the latest beta

Paul said...

Ah. I didn't see that. I will do so and report back tomorrow. Cheers!

Anonymous said...

After I chose foobar from the gadget menu, it showed "Notice: Error Downloading Plugin" and Norton Internet Security keep showing there is an attempt attack to my laptop. How can I solve this?

Anonymous said...

What about musikCube?!

http://www.musikcube.com/

Paul said...

4.03 is much much improved. It seems to still be a little bit buggy but Foobar track titles change as they should.
I love this app. Thanks!

Paul said...

Hi,
I just made a donation becasue this gadget is great. Also to spur you on to resove the remaining bugs in 4.03. It causes Foobar to stall periodically when starting up and sometimes between songs. It translates into a 5-10 second silence with that annoying Vista 'moving circle'.
Keep up the good work!

Kyle said...

Great gadget. throwing real player or Rhapsody into the mix would be great. if you get a chance. other than that, awesome.

Anonymous said...

Thanks but I down loaded it and it is out of frame?? I have my sidebar and the album art is half way down the outline of the box it should be in I think you should fix the gadget!

Just started using Now Playing with Media Monkey. I love it. Thanks for such a useful gadget!

Anonymous said...

Nice gadget! Very similar to a album art gadget that I use on XP.

Thank you for your hard work.

John said...

Is anyone else having problems with with WMP icon showing up interlaced with the album art when a track starts playing? The only way to get this icon to disappear is to click anywhere inside the gadget. I love this gadget, but this is driving me nuts!

Anonymous said...

works, idk how it works yet tho lol

Any chance to add AIMP 2 support?

Andrzej said...

Hi, NP doesn't change the track and cover when you manually change the track in Foobar. I've deleted every previous version of NP on my disk. Tried several options in Layout Settings. No joy. Any help Paul? Otherwise - genious gadget, was working fine in before versions... :/

Anonymous said...

this is seriously cool!
thanx man!
gr8 wrk!

Fantastic Gadget. Is there anyway to make the playlist list stick around (i.e., not disappear)? Or perhaps once it has disappeared is there a quick way to bring it back?

I'd like to use it kind of like a radio, where my playlists are the stations.

Great work on this.

Anonymous said...

can you make it compatinle with AIMP player ?

Anonymous said...

How about an option for bitrate display, would be awesome.

Anonymous said...

can you provide a list of files when installed? i run WMP in x64, so NP4.0 didn't work for that player.

after i uninstalled, i checked WMP x86 and saw that a wmpuice.dll was still there and had not been uninstalled.

any other files i can clean up? appreciate the info

Law James said...

AFAIK that's the only file it will install if you run it in WMP mode. By the way it will work with WMP X86 on a X64 OS, that's what I do.

Anonymous said...

AHHH! I just want to say I've been looking for a gadget EXACTLY like this with even less features and I have to say this blows me away... I love this thing. Thanks a hella ton.

Anonymous said...

Great application!
A suggestion for future updates: I'm use both itunes and mediaplayer and would love to have a "Now playing" that could handle these two simultaneous...

Thanks!

This is an AWESOME gadget, however I have "disable using folder.jpg for album art AND using Google but it still not pulling ONLY tag art.

I spend LOTS of time making sure that my MP3's are tagged with the right art I want.

Thanks
