Now Playing Development Ceased

From now on there will no longer be any updates to the Now Playing gadget. What was originally meant to be a very simple gadget is now way too complex and too much of my time is now spent dealing with people who have some issue and have not read the readme - I've had enough.

It also comes down to the fact there is simply no way of making money from the gadget, I had envisaged if I made this gadget full of features and filled everyone's requests that people would donate, but this has not been the case. Therefore it's not worth my time.

Ok for me, this is sad to read, I love your gadget....and if possible....I'd like to see more and different ones. I know one donation from someone does not mean that much, I run a website too, and it's hard to get people to "bite." I just hope that you don't give up on creating these because they are great, useful and appreciated.

Hey there,

Just to let you know that I think this is the best gadget I've used, and it's gutting to hear that you've suspended development. I do understand though, things like this can totally eat your time when you just wanted them to be fun.

Thanks for all your hard work, and hopefully we'll see something new from you in the future on this.

Well, I would just like to say thanks for making one of my favorite sidebar gadgets. I know that people will always have issues or suggestions for the next update and recently, i've noticed that updates were becoming more and more frequent. Thanks for keeping up with all the whiners and putting up with the idiots. I'm actually excited that the gadget is now "complete" and i won't have to download a new one every few days. But I look forward to anything else you develop, and from now on i will donate :)

Thanks for providing this gadget - it does exactly what I need it to do.

I hope it will still be available to download

thank you for all your hard work on this gadget. its truely my favorite/most used gadget.

i commend you for putting up with the whiners for this long. is it just me or people seem to complain more when the software is free?

This is one of my favorite sidebar gadgets. It's worked perfectly for me since I started using it 3 or 4 months back.

I've just sent a donation - not to ask you to keep writing but to thank you for what you've done to date and hope that you keep the download available. :)

James, Thanks for such a great effort and for reminding us that there is a cost for "free" gadgets. I just made a donation as a "thank you" for the work you have done. Cheers.

Thank you for all the time you've put into this gadget. I am having a problem with the latest version of NowPlaying. I don't want to get into the description of the problem since you've discontinued work on it, but I would like to downgrade to the previous version (all links on your website point to the same version). Do you still have a copy of the version without ID3 tag support?

Again, thank you for NowPlaying.

Ziv said...

Err... Nevermind. I messed around with main.js and found how to disable the ID3 check and everything works fine.

Thank you! :)

Great news for us Now Playing gadget fans, whatever apple messed up in the last couple of iTunes releases that stopped now playing working with it has been fixed by the update released today and it works with iTunes again!

I only installed Now Playing for the first time today, and was wondering why people were saying it doesn't work with the new iTunes (I'm using 7.5 and it works flawlessly). That's crazy!

I was thinking about donating before I read the end-of-life announcement.

Maybe you could license a paid version? The only updates that are really needed are ones to ensure that it continues to work as iTunes evolves. If it was only $5 or $10 I would definitely buy it!

Technically it shouldn't break with updates of iTunes as API's rarely change and definitely shouldn't between minor updates, it compatibility is totally broken though i will fix the gadget.

I can't really do a paid version as there is no way to protect the code, anyone could just re-host the gadget file somewhere else and re-distribute it unfortunately.
